The original academy building was built in 1740 as a house of worship. Later, in 1749, it was converted into the Academy. The location of the academy (building) was on the west side of Fourth Street just around the corner from Arch Street. Later, a Dormitory was built (c. 1755) on the north side, and a Provost House was built on the SW corner of Fourth and Arch. At the time, the academy was the largest building in Philadelphia; 100 x 70 feet. Today, the Holiday Inn stands in its place.
