The 'Grange Boys Modern Secondary School' Its impressive proper title, was located on Regent Street in Ellesmere Port. Next to the boys school the equivalent girls school.

It was for kids who FAILED the Eleven Plus exam. John Lennon (Beatles) referred to this type of school as a "Go Do Woodwork School" It was probably built in the Nineteen thirties. There were about 600 boys attending if the were not 'playing wag' 'truant)

When I got there in 1945,most of the teachers were women. but they were gradually replaced by the returning soldiers.

Scholastically it was a bloody awful school. Most kids could read and write upon Leaving at 15. and we all learned and remembered '1066, Battle of Hastings'. However it was a fun school. I had a good memories of my time there. If the sun was shinning my buddies and I would "play wag" and go swimming in the 'Cut' ( Shropshire Union Canal) or the ship canal,

Billy Roberts was the head master. A great guy. His only interest was soccer. If you were good at the game you could hang out in his office. One of his lads even played for England School Boys. a proud moment for The Grange.
