primary follicle/oocyte
The hormone that plays a crucial role in the development and release of a secondary oocyte is luteinizing hormone (LH). It is released by the pituitary gland and triggers ovulation, the process by which the mature ovarian follicle releases the secondary oocyte.
In a primary follicle, the main cell types include oocytes and granulosa cells. The oocyte is the immature egg cell, while the granulosa cells surround and support the oocyte, providing nutrients and hormones. Additionally, the primary follicle may also contain theca cells, which are involved in hormone production and support the follicle's development.
Any oogonia that has arrested itself in meiosis I prophase-dipotene on the onset of OMI (oocye maturation inhibition) hormone in the 3rd month of pregnancy and there after is a primary oocyte. On the urge of Leutinizing hormone which induces the pre-ovulatory phase, the primary oocyte completes meiosis I and arrests itself in meiosis II metaphase, which would only be completed if fertilization occurs, otherwise it will degenrate in 24 hours. On the completion of meiosis I, a SECONDARY oocyte and forst polar body is going to be formed.
A primary oocyte is arrested in the prophase stage of meiosis I.
A primary oocyte divides into a secondary oocyte and a polar body during meiosis I. The secondary oocyte undergoes meiosis II to produce a mature ovum (egg) and another polar body.
A secondary oocyte arrests in the metaphase II stage of development.
the thinning of the cervical mucus is due to the estrogen spike prior to ovulation. This is caused by the primary oocyte signaling the anterior pituitary gland that it has matured and is ready for release.
LH Leutenizing hormone- it stimulates the release of the oocyte into the fallopian tube, i.e. ovulation. [Do not confuse with FSH- follicle stimulating hormone, which stimulates the growth/maturation of the follicle containing the oocyte IN the Ovary.]
