You can have many ideas, but you must narrow them down to a few main ideas.

Take this as an example essay question:Why should children have mandatory schooling?

You come up with 10 ideas including 9. school can be fun and 10. You make lots of friends and goof off all day. You look at the 10 ideas and decide that most are unimportant. You decide to write about 3 points:

  1. School teaches basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics.
  2. School builds on basic skills in ways that help in real life situations.
  3. School grades 1 to 12 prepares students to go on to college or to get entry-level employment.

You can address these 3 points in a short essay, but you cannot adequately address 10 or more ideas. Plus, these 3 also have a theme of "teaching, building, preparing" students for later life.
