Emergency medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with acute sickness or injury. This form of medicine is concerned with sustaining life and limb before handing the patient over to the appropriate department for specialised care.

Those who work in emergency medicine are usually found in the Emergency Department of the hospital (sometimes referred to as the ER, ED or A&E).

Emergency medicine is vital as it ensures that any life threatening conditions are eliminated or controlled so life and limb can be sustained. Emergency medicine workers include surgeons, doctors, nurses, paramedics, ambulance officers, triage personnel and other hospital workers. These workers must be able to function in rushed and stressful conditions and make clear judgment quickly.
