George Bruce designed and built the Toyah school in 1912. It was later converted into a gymnasium and served in that purpose until the school was forcibly closed when it was annexed into Pecos. A one story school building a block or so to the southwest was the "modern" school. It was closed in 1974 after a lengthy court battle that reached the Supreme Court was lost by the community.

George Bruce is buried in the newer Toyah cemetery NW of town. He is my great great grandfather. He was also a noted builder of several large buildings in the Trans-Pecos area. Some in Barstow, TX, Carlsbad, NM, & elsewhere.
