Indiana was not "found" in the traditional sense, as it was inhabited by Native American tribes long before European settlers arrived. The area was explored by French traders in the 17th century, and it became part of the United States through the Northwest Ordinance in 1787. Indiana was officially admitted as the 19th state on December 11, 1816.
