Examinations are one way that you find out how much a student has actually learned. Teachers use them because it is easier to give one examination to many students than it is to sit down with every single student and quiz them face-to-face.
There is not a known answer to who invented exams. Exams are designed to measure progress and show knowledge and skill of concepts. Just think-- you can show off on the SAT!
