In 1850, opposition to Black education primarily came from Southern states, where laws were enacted to prohibit the education of enslaved people and free Blacks. White supremacist attitudes and fears of empowerment among Black individuals fueled this opposition, as many believed that education would lead to challenges to the existing social and economic order. Additionally, societal norms and discriminatory practices reinforced barriers to access, limiting opportunities for Black individuals to receive an education.
