Mark's Gospel was the first New Testament gospel to be written, and this is first said by God in that gospel. It occurs in two places - at the baptism of Jesus and at the Transfiguration of Jesus.

The two statement are not only similar, but are closely linked by the framework structure of Mark, as we shall see. This takes the form of a parallel structure, which is a literary sequence in which an opening set of events is contrasted with another, parallel set of events that mirrors the first, using context and association for emphasis and to develop themes that would not otherwise be apparent, as can shown in the following summary:A . Mark's Gospel never has Jesus or any of his disciples refer to him as the Son of God, perhaps to avoid Jewish claims of blasphemy, yet the author wishes to explain to the reader that Jesus was indeed the Son of God. He lets outsiders, such as demons (event H, 3:11-12) and the High Priest (event S', where he is letting the reader understand the answer to Jesus' question in event S) refer to Jesus as the Son of God, and as outsiders they do not implicate the early Christians in offending possible Jewish converts. Jesus even neutralises the claim made by the demons, not only by telling them to tell no one, but by his matching statement in event H' (10:18), where he says, "Why call me good? There is none good but God."

Most importantly, God twice calls Jesus his beloved son (events C, C'). Thus, it is God himself who tells the reader that Jesus is his son, a claim that if true could not offend the Jews.
