Spelling is mostly memorizing, but there are some things you can do to help you along. * Learn the Rules. Pay attention to spelling rules like "I before E, except after C, unless it sounds like A, as in NEIGHBOR and NEIGH." Click on the Related Links for more spelling rules and tips. * Learn the Phonics. Phonics means sounding out the letters and learning how each letter is pronounced in different words. Phonics helps because you can listen to how a word is pronounced and get a pretty good idea of how to spell it. Of course, there are words that are not spelled the way they sound, but you can learn those by memorizing them. * Learn some background. If a word originally comes from some other language (English "borrows" lots of words from lots of different languages, which is one of the reasons spelling is so hard with English), then you can get ready to just memorize the spelling, because the normal rules and phonics won't help. If a word started out as an English word, you can usually figure out how to spell it. How do you pronounce "ghoti?" Answer: pronounce the "gh" as in the word "tough" - pronounce the "o" as in the word "women" - pronounce the "ti" as in the word "nation" (see the very end for the answer if you can't figure it out) And the Number 1 Spelling rule?
