Leaders are called to influence and motivate their subordinates in order to accomplish objectives that could not otherwise be completed alone. To this end, an effective leader must excel at communication. Reasons for this include, but are not limited to:

Ensuring that all team members understand the task at hand- that is, knowing what the job is and why they are doing it.

Proper delegation of resources, manpower, and tasks so that the job is done completely and at a minimum in confusion and delays. Also to avoid uneven workloads and steps being done out of order.

To correct any deficiencies in the team's work, as well as to mediate conflicts that might arise.

As you might imagine, being a leader is a very tough job. The leader's goal is to pass credit and praise to his team, and take responsibility for them if they fail. But having good communication skills is an absolute must in leadership.
