Why is self-reliance a good thing?

Self-reliance means one does not have to rely on others for help and instead, one turns to one's own resourcefulness to solve a problem. In a society in which problems are solved by an entity, the more personnel who are not self reliant gravitate towards to the entity with the expectation of having the problem solved. However, the more personnel who rely on the entity to solve the problem, the entity will soon be overtaxed and unable to perform the problem solving services, leaving those who rely on the entity not being helped. Persons who remove themselves from this narrative and instead rely on themselves stand a better chance of solving their own problems in a faster more efficent manner than one who is demands services from an overtaxed and underperforming entity.
