Absolutely not!!! They have little idea of what is really needed to obtain an appropriate education. If you gave them a choice they would neglect courses such as composition, math, laboratory science, humanities, social science, etc., in favor of just those courses particular to their major. That would not provide many of the basics needed for a well rounded education. I had a student ask me why he needed to take math, when his major is game design. If you know anything about game design, you would understand how ridiculous that question was. Thus, if you gave him the opportunity to choose just the courses he wanted, he would never succeed in his major. The programs are designed in a particular way for a reason. Students must understand that there is a purpose behind a curriculum layout.

Within the United States, students choose their program of study, based on their overall career goals and objectives. Once admitted to the program, they then must follow the curriculum as designed by the department who's area of responsibility the program lies.

No, not at all they will only pick the subjects that they think are fun. This will lead to them failing!

I am not sure what age group you are talking about. College students are free to learn anyway they want, as long as their method works for them.
