Why should students have homework?

On average a normal person must be "exposed" to material 7-10 times before they fully remember it. Please read the previous sentence 9 times.

Teachers assign homework because lecturing in class and reading the book is not enough time spent with the material. When doing homework students have to interact with their topic and actively think about it. Doing homework and getting it back adds an average of 3-4 exposures because you read the material, think about it and write it down. The act of writing also aids in the memory process. These exposures then when combined with review allows a student to remember the material not only on the test but in the future as well.

Homework reinforces what is taught at school, and helps to develop good study habits and responsibility. Sometimes people are unable to learn everything they should be learning in school hours.
