At the time the United States was originally formed from 13 British colonies, it was felt to be more important to create a unified nation in order to resist British colonialism, than it was to allow for different political philosophies in different states, but over time, there was so much disagreement about various issues relating to slavery, that eventually the southern states felt that the most efficient means of ending those arguments would be to have their own country where they could make their own rules without obtaining the agreement of the northern states.
