Reinforcement refers to enhancement of behavior or enhancement of memory. The gradual reinforcement thus means a step by step or slow enhancement of memory.

How are positive and negative reinforcement similar and how are they different?

Positive reinforcement is when you reward someone (person, child, pet, etc.) when they do what you want them to, and you ignore them when they do what you don't want them to do. Negative reinforcement, I believe, is when you punish someone for doing what you don't want them to do. As far as their effectiveness, it seems that a combination of both is good. Positive reinforcement is essential, and negative reinforcement helps to round it out. It is, however, important to be careful with negative reinforcement because if you put too much attention on someone while trying to enact the punishment (IE, time out), then, subconsciously, they may enjoy even the negative attention and thus you will have a counterproductive effect.

Do people usually look forward to receiving negative reinforcement?

People very often confuse negative reinforcement with punishment

What is positive reinforcement?

Positive reinforcement is when you reward a behavior to encourage it. Negative reinforcement is when you discourage an unwanted behavior. It is NOT when you add or subtract a consequence from a situation. hope this helped.... StarGaizer42 :) *Edit I edit this as you are incorrect with Negative reinforcement StarGaizer42, Negative Reinforcement IS when you remove a stimulus or consequence to encourage good behavior. i.e. If you do this now(good thing), you wont have to do that later (bad thing) Cheers Baker718 Edit*

What is a response contingent reinforcement?

Contingencies of reinforcement are consequences that increases, maintains, or reduces the probability that the behaviour will be repeatedPositive reinforcement: when the introduction of a consequence increases or maintains the probably/frequency of a behaviour > When you receive a bonus for your hard work it makes you want to work hard again to get the bonusPunishment: when a consequence decreases the frequency or future probability of a specific behaviour; usually an introduction of something unfavourable > when you get a demotion for doing failing to complete your job assignments, it makes you stop procrastinating on your assignmentNegative reinforcement: when the removalof a consequence increases or maintains the frequency or future probability of a specific behaviour > when your mom stops complaining and nagging because you cleaned your room, it would make you want to continue cleaning your room so you don't have to deal with her naggingExtinction: when the target behaviour decreases because no consequences/reinforcements follows it > When managers stop congratulating employees for their great performance, employees tend to slack offWhen trying to motivate someone, you shoudl use positive reinforcement for positive outcomes and extinction for unfavourable outcomes because negative reinforcement and consequences creates negative emotions in people.

How are infants conditioned?

Infants can be conditioned through positive reinforcement, such as giving praise or rewards for desired behaviors, or through negative reinforcement, where undesirable behaviors lead to consequences like time-outs. It can also involve classical conditioning, where a neutral stimulus is paired with a natural response to create an association. Overall, conditioning in infants is a gradual process that shapes their behaviors and responses over time.
