Advantages: less CO2 emissions, which contribute to climate change, as most scientists agree. Carbon dioxide also contributes to ocean acidification, which harms coral reefs and marine species in general.

-more sustainable; fossil fuels (ie coal and oil) WILL run out. Solar energy will not, at least not for a VERY long time

-fewer toxic emissions. Burning coal releases all kinds of toxic chemicals like Mercury in addition to particulates like soot that contribute to Asthma and other respiratory diseases.

-less acid rain. Burning coal produces sulfur dioxide (SO2), which is the main acid in acid rain formation (sulfuric acid H2SO4).

Disadvantages: Dams can produce hydroelectric power, but they disrupt migratory fish patterns and require the destruction of a large area of land upstream from the dam for a reservoir.

The biggest issue with clean energy and why it is not more common is upfront cost.
