Car manufacturers test out their new car features in crash tests using dummies as substitutes for humans. They try there test s in different environments and while much testing can be done on closed tracks, real-world car testing needs to take place in real-world conditions. By combining data from the track with information from driving on public roads, manufacturers use testing to create vehicles that they hope will satisfy the market.

In these tests they take, they cover all topics of requirement in a car, they check everything from comfort, reliability to safety , before bringing their cars to the markets the manufacturers have to make sure that the safety features in the car are working properly, they therefore crash test the cars to see what happens to the dummy and the amount of damage which takes place to the human.

So overall the way to describe the way the manufacturers test out their new features is by saying that they basically abuse a vehicle and test it's limit and the amount of harm it causes for the human inside and not the damage to the car, but obviously they have to test the fact that whilst the crash is happening the safety features all work together to keep the occupant safe.
