They are experimental at the moment.
They take part in races to help scientists and engineers find out the best and most effective designs.

Electric cars that charge their batteries from solar power can also be classed as solar powered.

Any car powered by the sun releases no harmful carbon dioxide emissions. Cars powered by fossil fuel (diesel, gasoline, petroleum) all contribute to global warming by their emissions. Solar powered cars don't.
