A supercharger is driven from your engine via a pulley and belt and as a consequence saps some of the existing power in order to make more power.

In modifying terms it would be better than turbocharging because the power is delivered in a more linear fashion right throughout the rev range however wold not be able to match the power outputs delivered by turbocharging.

In OEM fitments such as the 2002-2006 MINI Cooper S, if the supercharger fails then it will be an added expense to replace however generally they are very reliable.
