The US is the top consumer of energy in the world. Back then in the 1970's, the US needed sources on where to find its energy. The Middle-East such as Saudi Arabia and Emirates had the oil at the time, and were oil-producing countries. The US needed to do business with these people, whether they wanted to or not.

Unconventional Energy not to be confused with renewable energy. For the US unconventional energy sources are: nuclear(which is not for many other countries, e.g. France), bio-fuels, solar, geothermal and wind.

The energy that makes things for us is typically chemical energy derived from sources such as fossil fuels, nuclear power, or renewable sources like solar or wind energy. This energy is harnessed and converted into electricity or other forms of power to create products and services for human use.
The US needed to find alternative energy sources for several reasons, including decreasing reliance on finite fossil fuels, reducing environmental impact from burning these fuels, increasing energy security, and addressing climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Diversifying the energy sources also helps to stabilize energy prices and promote innovation in the energy sector.
