if it only backfires when shutting off, usually this means its getting to much gas!! if it backfires will running adjust carburater.
I'd check vacuum hoses first. Then check to make sure the idle adjustment on the carb isn't offset.
Not enough gas in the tank and it sloshes to the back!
Check your EGR valve
Does the gas pump keep shutting off ? If so , try putting the gas pump nozzle all the way in and then pull it back about 1 inch . A gas station attendent told me that when the gas pump kept shutting off when I was trying to fill my Ford Explorer gas tank , it works for me

It could be something with the pump itself, or you are going over the limit in what you paid for gas.
