Solar power systems do not generate any exhaust or air pollution, and once the solar power system is installed, the energy from the Sun is free.
On the other hand, solar power only works during the daytime, and not even then in bad weather. In the winter, when you really NEED the heat, the Sun is at its lowest elevation and you'll generate less power. Solar power is OK for fixed installations, like your home or office, but doesn't work for mobile installations like cars.
Large solar power plants take a lot of room, and are generally located quite a way from the city. The fixed solar plants (and large wind turbine farms) are fatal to a lot of birds.
Fossil fuels are rich in energy, and are relatively plentiful. (In fact, new fossil fuel reserves are being discovered faster than we're using them up.) Using fossil fuels generates some exhaust and pollution (although, modern engines are much cleaner and efficient than they were even 10 years ago).
Ultimately, all energy only comes from the Sun. This is how the energy is transferred: Sun>plants>animals. Therefore, fossil fuels obtain their energy from plants itself and animals when they've consumed plants.
Fossil fuels wwwwwwwere once living plants and animals. If they were plants they got their energy from the sun, and if they were animals they got their energy from eating plants who got their energy from the sun, or from eating animals who ate animals who ate plants who got their energy from the sun. In other words the sun is the source of all energy. The sun´s energy is stored in living beings, in plants and the animals that eat the plants, and if conditions are right, that energy is then stored in the form of fossil fuels.
fossil fuels
The major fossil fuels are coal, oil and natural gas. Our worldwide consumption of fossil fuels continues to increase with time. The more developed countries use more fossil fuels. Our personal use is tied to electrical usage and gasoline consumption. So, more fuel efficient cars and houses that are more energy efficient are means of lowering consumption. Development of alternative energy sources reduces our dependence on fossil fuels. Energy generated from wind and solar power at present, contribute very little to our overall energy needs. Biofuels are controversial. Converting crops to fuels, may increase the cost of food. To many in the world, affordable food comes first. Increasing the number of nuclear energy power plants is also controversial, primarily with safety concerns in storing spent nuclear material. Means of reducing fossil fuel consumption is not easy. However, higher prices motivates people to find ways to cut back their energy use. See related links.
Plants get their energy through photosynthesis, converting sunlight into chemical energy. Animals get their energy by consuming plants or other animals. This natural process has been occurring for millions of years before the use of fossil fuels.
The sun. Fossil fuels are made up of plants and animals that lived in the past and have been converted to fossil fuels by geological processes over time. And as plants convert the suns energy into sugars, fossil fuels are stored solar energy.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The energy comes from the energy that was previously in dead plants/animals... to understand better read about the carboniferous period. It explains how fossil fuels were created, through the compression of decaying plant material that had lots of locked up carbon underneath layers of sediments.
Plants and animals both store energy found in fossil fuels by going threw a system call cell fertilization thru out their life.
The main advantage of solar power plants is how good they are for the environment by releasing no greenhouse gasses like fossil fuels do. Also the energy source from the sun is not going to run out like coal and oil will.
Nuclear power plants do not produce greenhouse gas emissions during operation, unlike fossil fuel power plants. Nuclear power is also a more space-efficient way of generating electricity compared to fossil fuels, as nuclear plants require less land for the same amount of energy produced. Additionally, nuclear energy is more reliable and has lower fuel costs in the long run.
When the trees and vegetation were growing they took in solar energy through photosynthesis. This energy was stored in the plants as hydrocarbons. It remains there as the plants, over millions of years, become fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas).
Geothermal energy is not a fossil fuel, because it is harnessing energy from the thermal heat energy within the earth and is not dependent upon decomposed ancient plants and animals, which is what coal, oil, and natural gas are, which is why they are called "fossil fuels."
The energy from the stage before it. e.g. plants get energy from the sun through photosynthesis, and herbivores get energy from the plants through consumption.
