Gasoline and air is compressed inside the combustion chamber (the cylinder) by a piston. At a set time (timing) a bit of current is sent to the spark plug from the distributor. This spark jumps across the spark plug inside the cylinder causing the gasoline and air to ignite. This igniting of the gas and air is a small explosion that is contained inside the cylinder. The explosion pushes the piston down causing the connecting rods to rotate the crank shaft. A V8 has eight cylinders and a V6 has 6 cylinders. Each cylinder has a piston and all connect to a single crank shaft. The crank shaft rotates as each piston compresses and fires at different times to keep the crank shaft turning. This is where your gas goes after you put it in the tank. It just burns up in small controlled explosions to propel you forward or backward or to work for you. Find an old lawnmower motor and tear the thing apart to see how it works if you really want to have some fun!
