Radar is used to detect concentrations of water droplets in the atmosphere, which tells meteorologists where rainfall, snow and hail are occurring.

just like the rain gauge
The automatic rainfall recording instrument has two jobs in which it performs. Both are done simultaneously; recording and indicating. It measures the amount of rainfall, as well as record the data onto a paper or graph.
thermometer
using an instrument by the name "RAIN GAUGE" !
It is called a water meter
A rain gauge is called a pluviometer or udometer
Cherrapunji, Meghalaya has the highest rainfall rate in India. Recently a nearby village to Cherrapunji, ie., Mawsynram has been recording more rainfalls.
Barometer (barometric pressure) Thermometer (temp) & rain guage (amt of rainfall in inches)
A continuous record of rainfall is measured by a rain gauge. Although it is impossible to measure all the rainfall in a specific area, a rain gauge can give meteorologists a good idea of how much rain has fallen in an area.
Actually there is no precise record of average rainfall in this city, the data are variable by time of recording. but the average is about 60 mm . in this winter (2011 January) we got only less than 10 mm till now.
There is no single instrument as there are different types of natural disasters with different things that can be measured. Anemometers, barometers, and rain gauges can measure wind, pressure and rainfall in storms. A seismometer can measure the intensity of a earthquake.
