Advantage over?DC motors used to be preferred where precise control and variability of rotation speed were desired, but modern motor design and electronic controls have very largely negated that advantage.A series motor is useful mainly for driving a tram or bus because the torque is proportional to the square of the current. That means that a very large torque is produced for starting up and no gearbox is necessary. The motor is started with a current-limiting resistor which is switched down by the driver or automatically as the speed builds up.
disadvantage of in-band signalling
the main reason is the amount of current flowing in the motor's winding is huge (over current) that why temperature begins to build up, continues using may end up to a burned motor. over voltage, defective bearing / bushing, shaft misalignment, defective insulation are some of the reason why motor experience over current.
It depends entirely on the motor design. The only universal disadvantage of a DC motor (vs. an AC motor) is the need for a DC power supply (DC power is more difficult to transmit efficiently over long distances, hence the use of AC for typical power grids). Typical brushed DC motors (the cheapest and hence one of the most common type of DC motor) tend to wear out eventually due to friction and draw MUCH higher current when stalled than when turning, which can cause overheating. They are also typically heavier than AC motors with similar specs. Of course all of these problems can be eliminated by using a (slightly more complex) brush-less motor design.
Yes, the rotation of a shaded pole motor can be reversed. It is advisable to only attempt this on a small motor and if you have general mechanical and electrical knowledge. The simple and direct explanation is one has to flip the stator. To do this the motor must be disassembled to a point at which the rotor can be removed. Once removed, turn it end over end and reinstall. Done. Note that the bearing housing ends will likely have to be switched as well.
A 3-phase motor produces a steady torque that does not pulsate. A 3-phase motor starts turning in the right direction when switched on without the need for a separate starting winding.

Most if not all locomotives have switched over from the old style of a burning fuel source to a completely electric design. Pretty much every locomotive in use today have switched over to a hybrid design.
