For a shunt dc motor the rheostat would vary from zero ohms to a value that produces the required minimum field current, but rheostats are not common with shunt motors except as a crude way of controlling the speed.

Series dc motors normally use rheostats for starting, especially in trams etc. because the starting torque and current is very high. The rheostat resistance starts at a value equal to the supply voltage divided by the maximum allowable current drawn, and is reduced as the speed builds up.

What is a resistor whose value can varied over a range of value called?

Variable resistor. The value of the variable resistor can be changed at any given moment.

What is hunting in a DC motor?

when a dc motor armature current is fluctuated in a range then it is call hunting in a d.c motor.

What is separately excited DC motor?

The main difference between the Separately excited motor and the shunt motor is the field cct where as in the second it has its own voltage supply.AnswerI think you mean 'generator', not 'motor'. A 'self-excited' motor is one in which the output supplies the field current, as well as the load current. A 'separately-excited' motor is one in which the field current is provided from an external source.

Can you connect 460Vac motor to 480Vac circuit?

Yes, the 440 volt motor is withing the 10% voltage range of the 460 volt group. When the supply is said to be 480 volts, usually it is lower than what it is stated to be. Once the motor is connected check the current against the motor's nameplate amperage.

What is MCC in electrical engineering?

MOTOR CONTROL CENTER. A motor control center consists of one or more vertical metal cabinet sections with power bus and provision for plug-in mounting of individual motor controllers. Very large controllers may be bolted in place but smaller controllers can be unplugged from the cabinet for testing or maintenance. Each motor controller contains a contactor or a solid-state motor controller, overload relays to protect the motor, fuses or a circuit breaker to provide short-circuit protection, and a disconnecting switch to isolate the motor circuit. Three-phase power enters each controller through separable connectors. The motor is wired to terminals in the controller. Motor control centers provide wire ways for field control and power cables. Each motor controller in an MCC can be specified with a range of options such as separate control transformers, pilot lamps, control switches, extra control terminal blocks, various types of bi-metal and solid-state overload protection relays, or various classes of power fuses or types of circuit breakers. A motor control center can either be supplied ready for the customer to connect all field wiring, or can be an engineered assembly with internal control and interlocking wiring to a central control terminal panel board or programmable controller.

You select the cell which will act as the top left cell of the destination.

What is the difference between a variac and a rheostat?

These devices could, in theory, be interchangeable. Variac is a (typically single coiled) variable transformer, whereas rheostat is a variable resistor. Although they may look just the same, they differ in one aspect - wire resistance. It should be as low as possible for variac, but it can differ on rheostats. So-you can use wire rheostat as a low efficiency variac and you can use wire variac as ridiculously huge rheostat, resistive range of which serves no practical purpose.
