What is the process of becoming an electrician?

Read up on Electrical Fundaments. Learn this basics about electricity and what it does. Learn how to read wiring diagrams, how to shoot for power (using multimeter), and what kind of current you're looking for (Alternating Current/AC and Direct Current/DC). What you're actually looking for, an open circuit is when a wire is cut or broken and electricity isn't able to get where it needs to go, or a short circuit is when electricity is taking the easiest path and isn't going to where it should be going. Shorts can be recognized easily if you see a circuit breaker popped. Sorry for this, but you should definitely look into Electrical Fundamentals books, and then get some hands on experience from someone who knows what they are doing. Hope I helped out a little bit.

How do you connect 480 volts to a 230 volt transformer?

First. You should not attempt this unless you are an electrician and KNOW what you are doing. Second: Ensure transformer is rated for 480 primary and 120/240 secondary. Third: See step One... But if you insist on doing it yourself, make sure your insurance is paid up.... On the Primary side of the transformer will be leads marked H1 H2 H3 etc. On the Secondary side the leads will be marked X1 X2 X3 etc. Look on the nameplate data on the transformer. It should tell you if it is rated for 480volts and should have a wiring diagram on it... If it does not, get one that does to ENSURE that you have the correct transformer.... I am an Electrician with BS in Engineering and 21 Years experience... If you seriously need help with this, email me sndemailhere@yahoo.com
