An IR LED is used in applcations like remote controls...it's much the same as as a normal Light Emitting Diode...Just that the wavelength of the emitted light is not present in the visible spectrum...

Two pairs of Infrared LEDs are used as motion sensor detector. The first one is wired to emit LED and the second is wired to transmit a signal when it receives an infrared input. this infrared is reflected back to the receiving LED and then the signal is produced.
