The step-up transformer steps up the input voltage to a higher level so that it can be transmitted over a transmission line using smaller conductors. By the power law, power equals volts times amps, so you can achieve the same power with higher voltage and lower current, but the wire size is based only on current.

On the other end, step-down transformers reduce the high voltage back to usable levels.

When the output voltage is higher than the input voltage that is considered a step up transformer. When the output is less than the input you have a step down transformer. Input is also called primary and output secondary.

a transformer changes voltage and current by inducing a changing magnetic field in one coil. this changing field then induces an alternating current in a nearby coil with a different number of turns.

Answer

A 'step-up' transformer is one in which the voltage (not current!) induced into the secondary winding is higher than the voltage applied to the primary winding. In other words, it's used to provide a voltage that is higher than the available supply voltage.

What is the differences between a step-down transformer and a step-up transformer?

the main function of transformer is to change the magnitude of Voltage. difference between step up and step down is step up will change the input voltage into a larger magnitude of output while step down is vice versa

How do you xxplain in a simple way function of stepup and step down transformer?

The function of a step up transformer is to step up the voltage given to it. For eg 11/32KV transformer steps up 11 KV to 32 KV. The function of step down transformer is to step down voltage For eg 420/230 V it steps down 420V to 230 V It does step up or down According to step up or step down ratio called transformation ratio k which equals to K=Ns/Np =Vs/Vp =Ip/Is ie ratios Ns:Np=Vs:Vp=Ip:Is=k Vs=secondary voltage Vp=primary voltage Ns=secondary number of turns Np=primary number of turns Is=secondary current Ip=primary current
