In a thermal power plant, water is heated in a boiler to produce steam. This steam turns the shafts of a turbine.the thermal energy of the steam is converted into mechanical energy at the turbine. The turbine is coupled with an alternator. In the alternator, the mechanical energy of the turbine is converted into electrical energy.

It's similar to how the fossil fuel burning plants work, except a chain reaction is used. They use Uranium fuel rods as the fuel, and the heat is generated by nuclear fission (basically where they make neutrons crash into the nuclei of the Uranium atoms, which then split in half and release heat energy). Carbon dioxide or water is then pumped through the reactor to get rid of this heat, and this heat then heats the water to make steam. The steam drives turbines to drive generators, which generate electricity!

Largest size thermal power plant in India?

More than 65% of India's electricity generation capacity comes from thermal power plants, with about 85% of the country's thermal power generation being coal-based. The 10 largest thermal power stations operating in India are all coal-fired, with seven of them owned and operated by state-run National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).

What is the difference between thermal power plant and captive thermal power plant?

The basis of differentiation is end user. A thermal power plant produces electricity to sell the same to different end users through grid. But, in case of a captive thermal power plant generation of electricity generally is to meet the demand of power by the parent industry. For e.g. an Alumunium smelter plant requires huge quntity of elctric energy to operate. To secure undisrupted source of energy it may set up its own power plant which in turn can be termed as the captive power plant. But, in certain cases excess electricity can be sold to the market.

Should a power plant where the prime mover is a gas turbine be categorized as a thermal power plant?

No, a power plant that uses fossil fuels such as gas or coal, cannot be classified as a thermal power plant. A thermal power plant uses the heat from deep within the earth, combined with water to create steam, which then powers the turbines.
