Never use a acid core solder only resin core should be used and keep the temperature of the soldering iron as low as possible 250 deg C max soldering should be done in a well ventilated space.

What precautions should be observed when soldering a printed circuit board?

Mainly solder in as short a time as possible to avoid burning the traces causing them to lift. This means using a good quality temperature regulated iron that does not cool off when applied to the joint to be soldered and is not too hot either.

What do you mean by wave flow soldering?

Wave flow soldering is a method of soldering all the connections on a printed circuit board in a single step on a machine (instead of one at a time by hand).A wave flow soldering machine has the following parts:a heated tank containing molten solder covered with a thin layer of fluxone or more printed circuit board fixturesa mechanical wave generatorPrinted circuit boards are populated with components (on automatic part placement machines and/or manually by human assemblers). The populated printed circuit boards are placed in the fixtures. As each fixture goes into the wave flow soldering machine the wave generator sends a wave of solder down the length of the heated tank. The top of this wave just touches the bottom of the printed circuit board, soldering all the connections. After the fixtures leave the wave flow soldering machine they are allowed to cool a while and the printed circuit boards are removed. The soldered printed circuit boards are then washed to remove any flux residue left by the wave soldering machine, then sent to be tested to make sure they function as intended.Wave flow soldering works best for "through hole mounted" components.

What are the four steps for correctly soldering components to a printed circuit board?

1. Remove the soldering iron from the holder and wipe the tip on a sponge. 2. Heat the joint to be soldered. 3. Apply solder to the joint. 4. Apply a small bit of solder to the tip of the soldering iron and return it to the holder.

Is the use of a soldering gun on printed circuit boards recommended?

In general no because its easy to overheat the board and lift pads or even entire traces. However where the board has large areas of copper soldered to metal chassis lugs, if you need to unsolder such connections the only tool likely to be able to apply enough heat is a soldering gun.
