A: They are both diodes. The difference lies in the application. A rectifier is used to rectify AC current into pulsating current. The zener diode is used to regulate a voltage source to the zener voltage when connected in the reverse direction. ************************************************************** If you look at the characteristic curves of a rectifier diode and a zener diode, you will see that they are similar, but the reverse curve of the zener has a much sharper bend at what is called the "knee". I think its related to junction of two dissimilar semiconductor (or semiconductor and metal) and not only a semiconductor. well when two opposite nature semiconductor (hetero or homo) are joined to form a junctions they allow the flow of current in one direction while blocks it in other direction. The applied bias V which will cause the current flow is called forward bias and the current flowing through the junction forward bias current.
There is a method called dot convention which is used in transformers. the dot shows the direction of current flowing through the coil and whether the value of mutual inductance thus produced will be positive or negative.
