How are step-up and step-down transformers used in the transmission of electric current from the electric company to homes?

(This is what my teacher said, I wrote this down in my notes) The answer is, Step-up transformers are used to increase the voltage of an electric current before it is sent out over transmission lines from the electric company. Step-down transformers are used to reduce the voltage of current from high-voltage transmission lines before it enters homes and businesses. Some devices, such as televisions, contain step-up transformers that increase the voltage once again.

What devices use transformers?

Transformers are used to change the voltage in a circuit from high to low or from low to high. Some of the gadgets that use transformers include surround sound systems, the CPU power supply and speakers which have inbuilt amplifiers.

Will British electrical appliances work in US?

I was a US Government employee. Me and my family were sent to England where we resided for 7 years. We shipped all our household goods with us including all our US electrical appliances. Once there, we purchased transformers which come in various wattage ratings. The transformer actually converts the 220voltage down to the required 120 volts for US products. Anything with a motor would only be turning at 50 cycles a second vise the 60 cycles of US current. This would only affect the playing speed of say a record player (obselete now) but radios, toasters, coffee pots or anything of that nature would work fine. Hope this has helped. You need a transformer, as mentioned above. Note that for running UK appliances in the US that is not necissarily true, as the US has 120/240V service. You'd just need a special outlet for your 240V appliances. +++ Some, but by no means all, electronic appliances have 110/240V switches to allow use on either system.

Why some appliances producemoreheatthan others?

This depends specifically on the appliance and the way it is designed. For instance dryers, dishwashers, etc. are designed to produce heat and the heat given off is not necessarily a sign of energy loss or inefficiency. Also, appliances like refrigerators are not only designed to cool the inside, but also to take the warm air out of the food compartment, this is why you bottom vent on a fridge will often produce a warm breeze. The heat produced by appliances differed on design and efficiently its built. Remember! heat is only another form of energy and electrical energy turns into heat in objects like transformers, which are in appliances, and when this happens its energy loss. Appliances labeled as Energy Star are designed to eliminate energy loss and maximize efficiency which is also why Energy Star appliances may run cooler then typical appliances.
