Because if speed was used, the power system frequency would be changed. A synchronous generator spins at synchronous speeds.

Synchronous generators 101: A typical synchronous generator will have a field winding (typically on the rotor, or rotating part) and a stator winding (the stationary part where power is supplied to the power grid). Current is injected into the field winding, turning it into an electromagnet. This field current is controlled by the Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR). The more current supplied to the field winding, the stronger the electromagnet becomes, and the more power is required from the prime mover (whatever is supplying the power - steam turbine, for example) to keep the generator spinning at synchronous speeds.

Speed control method for synchronous motor?

True synchronous mode and self control mode

In what two ways can the speed of a dc motor be varied?

speed of a dc motor can be varied by mainly two methods:- 1)field control method 2)armature control method further , field control method can be divided in 3 parts:- 1)field rhestat control method---speed variation is acomplished by means of a variable resistance inserted in series with shunt field 2)reluctance control method---by changing the reluctance of magnetic circuit by choosing right material.. 3) field voltage control method-requires variable field voltage supply. and armature control method can be divided in 3 parts :- 1)armature resistance control---variable resisitance connected in series with armature 2)shunted armature control. 3)armature voltage control. ------------mrityunjay pandey (kiit university ,btech 2nd year)

How do you conduct test on speed control of DC motor using SCR?

Connect the SCR in series with the armature or field and control the firing angle of the SCR which in turns determine the current flowing to the armature or field.

What factors determine the synchronous speed of an AC motor?

Number of poles and supply freqency determines speed of synchronous motor. For speed control of such motors Variable Freqency Drives(VFD) are used.

What in slip speed control?

slip speed control refers to induction machines s=(synchronous speed-motor speed)/synchronous speed by varying slip the machine can be either be operate in generated mode or motor mode

Difference between synchronous generator and synchronous motor?

Speed control method for synchronous motor?

What is the electrical term excitation mean?

Excitation is normally used to describe the current supplied to the field winding of a motor. A motor has a rotating armature with a coil that rotates in the magnetic field produced by a fixed field coil. The current in the field coil can be taken from a series or parallel connection to the armature coil, or (usually for larger motors) it can be supplied independently via some sort of controller. Excitation can be used to control the speed of DC motors or the power factor of synchronous motors.

What are the disadvantages of armature speed control method for a dc motor?

In armature speed control, speed can be varied only below the rated speed. Also in it voltage drops will be high.

What is Comparison of armature controlled and field controlled DC servo motor?

Difference between field controlled and armature controlled is that field control is open loop and armature current is closed loop.

How do you control the height of the flame on a bunsen burner?

The valve on a Bunsen burner is able to control the gas flow by opening an closing an armature. The smaller the armature, the less gas flows and vice versa.

What is self control of synchronous motor drive?

the self control of a synchronous motor is done using an inverter fed through a dc link.speed is controlled by varying the output frequency of the inverter by controlling the dc link voltage
