Barred owls are larger then Spotted owls. Their plumage is also lighter in color, usually with a few white or brown streaks, unlike the spotted owl, which has dark brown plumage with many white and darker brown/black streaks or "spots". Barred owls have different mating cerimonies then spotted owls. Barred owls have a lighter hoot then spotted owls, but spotted owls have a much more pleasant one.
They are very smilier in shape in appearance but have very different lives and personalities.
Barred Owls; Humans
Eastern United States into western Canada, the Pacific Northwest and northern California..... Barred owls displace resident spotted owls and often breed with them.....
Spotted owls are primarily preyed upon by larger owls, such as great horned owls and barred owls. Other predators may include hawks, eagles, and mammalian predators like bobcats and raccoons. Loss of habitat and competition from invasive species also pose threats to spotted owl populations.
The barred owl, Strix Varia, is a very common species, and is even expanding their range in the northwestern US, where they are crowding out their close relative the spotted owl.
Preserve dense forests where it occurs. Although able to survive in cutover forests, this habitat is more suited to a very close relative, the barred owl. The barred owl is pushing the spotted owl out of these areas, and only the preservation of the great forests can help the spotted owl. Barred owls rarely frequent deep, dense woods.
not even close. they are VERY common so don't worry. the closest owl (the Spotted Owl) is almost extinct though.
