According to the latest report there are a total of 239 pandas in captivity, 128 in Wolong, a further 67 in Chengdu and 27 who live out of the country. It is estimated that there are about 1,590 pandas still living in the world. A study in 2006 using DNA analysis estimated the number of wild pandas to be more in the region of 2,000 to 3,000 and although reports show number may be rising, the World Conservation Union (IUCN) does not believe it is enough to remove pandas from the endangered animal list.
