The male kakapo is most unique in that, during breeding season, it will produce a deep sonic booming sound from its inflatable air sac (unusual in birds) in order to attract females. This booming sound can be heard by the females from several kilometres away. As the females approach, the male changes the sound to a high pitched metallic "ching" sound.
