Reduced to a few scattered populations in the mountain forests of central China, the Giant panda is now one of the rarest of all mammals. Despite this, it is not currently considered an endangered species, and determined conversation efforts may yet secure its future.

LIFESTYLE

Built like a bear, some aspects of the giant panda's anatomy suggest, instead, that it is a source of overgrown raccoon, as a result, scientists can still not agree which group of animals it belongs to. And while technically it's a carnivore, it has all but abandoned the predatory habits of its ancestors and became a placid vegetarian - although it will eat insects and rodents if it gets a chance.

CAPTIVE PANDAS

The isolation suffered by wild pandas in the wild is paralleled by the isolation of pandas in captivity. Ever since the animal was first described by a western naturalist in 1869 it has fascinated people throughout the world, not so much because of its biological values, but because it looks like the ultimate cuddly toy. And like other cuddly toys, pandas have been given away as presents - principally to diplomats and heads of state visits to China. Air-freighted home installed in zoos, there animals have spent the rest of their lives in picturesque solitary confinement. There are estimated to be about 100 pandas kept in zoos.
