We regulate rivers, we pollute, we build farms, villages and cities - which doesn't help the hippo.
But we also establish nature reserves and game parks, employ wildlife wardens and rangers - which does help the hippo.
Overall though the hippo would probably have done better if there weren't any humans at all.

In zoos the pygmy hippos are safe from hunters and natural predators. Pygmy hippos have plenty of food and water in the zoos. The zoo keepers breed the pygmy hippos. Also, some people are keeping pygmy hippos as pets.
