Improved: Why/How did these animals become extinct? Many hypotheses exist. The Dire Wolf skeleton is more stout than that of the Gray Wolf, suggesting an adaptation for power rather than speed. Most of its prey species were rather sedentary herbivorous animals that were not able to run very fast to escape predation. Scientists suspect that once those relatively slow-moving prey animals became extinct, the Dire Wolf may not have been able to hunt and capture swifter prey in order to survive.

The dire wolf was alive in the time of the iceage, Grey wolves were also living then as well. There is two theories as to why the Dire wolf did not make it but their cousin the Grey wolf did.

1) Dire wolves were much larger there for hunted larger and more dangerous prey this means more percentage of deaths occurred during hunting

2) Dire wolves were thought to take care of one another (unlike Modern day wolves) Dires shared their prey with the aging and sick thus was the downfall because the whole survival of the fittest not enough food to go around.

The dire wolf went extinct near the end of the last ice age, around 12000 years ago. Dire wolves preyed on the mega herbivores, and as they died out, compitition from the smaller and more common gray wolf lead to this species demise.
