the elephant's run away and try to protect the baby
Adult African elephants have no predators other than humans. Elephants calfs predators include lions, hyenas, and crocodiles. When a predator approaches a elephant herd the herd will form a protective circle around the young until the threat leaves.
Elephants are very social creatures. Both African and Asian elephants live in groups called herds. The herd is made up of cows or female elephants. Male or bull elephants leave their herd when 10-15 and join bachelor herds. The leader of a female elephant herd is called a matriarch. The matriarch is the oldest and most experienced elephant in the herd. The herd is usually made up of elephants they are related. If the herd becomes to big, the herd splits up, but stays close so the two herds can stay in touch.
Predators have to be extremely hungry to bother African elephants. Some predators such as female lions will follow the herd to try and grab a small elephant if they can, but mature female elephants are very wary of this.

Collective nouns for buffaloes are a herd of buffaloes, a gang of buffaloes, or a obstinacy of buffaloes. Collective nouns for elephants are a herd of elephants, a parade of elephants, or a memory of elephants.
African Elephants live in herds primarily. The majority of herds are led by a matriarch (oldest female), and the rest of the herd would consist of her sisters, and their children. The majority of elephants within a herd are related, except for when a male elephant would come into the herd to mate with the females that were in oestrus (in season). Once young male elephants are old enough (I don't know what age that might be) they leave the herd and head out by themselves. They will only come into a herd for mating season, and will encounter other males who they may fight for the right to mate particular females.
