Otters will build their homes or Holt, around where there is a good supply of natural food such as fish, crustaceans and amphibians. Large entrance holes are normally found under the roots of old riverbank trees and there is usually plenty of reed and bramble cover around. A lot of holt's are now man made due to habitat loss and are made to encourage otters to a specific areas of conservation. Otters like locations that are not disturbed by human activities such as dog walking. A good indication of whether the holt is active, is a wet mud slide running down in to the water, depending on how high up the bank the holt is situated.
