The Asiatic lion, Panthera Leo Persica, is the only lion subspecies endangered. Fully protected by the Indian goverment, the last 350 of this subspecies live in the Gir Forest. There are plans to release a group in a sanctuary three hundred miles to the southwest, but because of proximity to tiger country, the plan is on hold to see if the two great cats can live nearby each other without conflict. Tigers are loners, and live in more forested habitats than lions. Lions live in groups, and prefer open country.
