What was the height of a dire wolf?

The were a bit larger than normal size wolf, ranging in weight from about 110 lbs to 174 lbs. The Dire Wolf also had shorter front legs then today's wolf. The did hunt in packs, but brain wise was not suppose to be as intelligent as current wolves.

Dire wolves were actually around 24 inches at the shoulder, which is around the Mexican wolves' height (the Mexican wolf is the smallest gray wolf). Dire wolves made up for their short stature in weight.

Dire wolves had shorter legs compared to its body then gray wolves but were up to 70 pounds heavier. So i would say the average Dire wolf was 2.8 tall at the shoulder with the largest being almost 4 feet. Since the largest recorded Gray wolf weight was 175 lbs and three feet at the shoulder and there is a roomer going around about a wolf weighing 235 lbs. If this is true then the Dire wolf could have gotten 305 lbs that's more then the average lioness. But if the old record is the largest wolf then the Dire wolf would have only gotten to be 245 lbs almost as much as the average lioness.

Though generally larger than the modern day Gray wolf, at 250 lbs and 5 feet in length, it lived in North America and coexisted with the Gray wolf for thousands of years, just as coyotes and Gray wolves live along side each other today.
