They don't die from laying eggs, but from an evolutionary standpoint, there is no reason for a species to live past an age when it can reproduce. Almost every species on the planet dies at about the age when it can no longer reproduce, butterflies included. Humans have artificially extended our lives with modern medicine, making us one of the few exceptions to this rule. (thank God for that!) :)
