Actually the Golden opposum is one of four color phases of the Common Brushtailed Opposum. The Common Brushtailled Opposum is designated a "Least Concern" for Endangered status...which means the population is large and thriving.

The relative rarity of the golden color may be due to the fact that it's quite a standout compared to the "bland" color phases that blend in with the environment a

bit better.
