(I think you mean essential) Scientists think wolves are essential to ecosystems because they keep the deer, moose, elk, ect. populations under control. If ungulates become overpopulated in an area, they end up eating too much vegitation, which causes river banks to erode from lack of plant life holding the soil back, trees can't grow because the elk keep eating them down. Such as in Yellowstone. Before the wolves came back, species such as the raven, boreal frog, beavers, and grizzly bears were either extinct or critically endangered in the area.
