It's not actually, but is listed as "Near Threatened" by the IUCN. This species has an unusual history. Never a bird that was historically very common, this species thrives in cut over woodlands, and as eastern forests were thinned out, this created perfect habitat for this species, and its numbers increased.

Now, many areas that were cut down are being reforested, reducing suitable habitat. Also, hybridization with the similar blue winged warbler has reduced its numbers.
